A simple prayer: 'Lord, even as we enjoy the Super Bowl football game, help us be mindful of those who are without a bowl of soup to eat' is inspiring a youth-led movement to help hungry and hurting people around the world.
This prayer, delivered by Brad Smith, then a seminary intern serving at Spring Valley Presbyterian Church in Columbia, SC, gave birth to an idea. Why not use Super Bowl weekend, a time when people come together for football and fun, to also unify the nation for a higher good: collecting dollars and canned food for the needy? Youth could collect donations at their schools and churches in soup pots, and then send every dollar DIRECTLY to a local charity of THEIR choice."
First Baptist Church of Rochester Teens 'n Tweens group with participate in Souper Bowl of Caring again in 2010. This will be our fourth year. Over the past three years we have been able to collect $1734.00 and 1007 canned and boxed goods. We hope to make this year, 2010 our best collection year every! We will have our famous "soup" coffee hour on January 31st and we will continue to collect funds and canned good until Sunday, February 7.
All of the canned and boxed goods will go to the Brighton Food Depot to create bags of food for the children and their families in school #4 in the City of Rochester. All money donated (100%) will be donated to One Great Hour of Sharing who will give (100%) to assist our neighbors to our south in Haiti. Please bring items to the church each time you come to worship, meet, practice, or study. Also, place SBC in the memo line, when contributing to Haiti so the youth can record this gift as part of their mission giving.
Please continue to support our youth and their mission endeavors. Thank you.
